The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs presents the U.S. debut screening of X-102 Rediscovers The Rings Of Saturn on Friday, January 16, 7 PM, at the Claudia Cassidy Theater, as part of the Ohm Multimedia Series, concerts and events that incorporate new media in electronic music, performance and visual art. Ohm invites professionals from the art and music scenes, including live DJs and visual artists, to create multimedia artworks in front of an audience.
In 1992, X-102 (Experimental 102), otherwise known as Underground Resistance – the Detroit-based electronic musical trio of Mad Mike Banks, Jeff Mills and Robert Hood – set out to create a musical project about the planet Saturn and its rings in a full-length LP entitled X-102 discovers the Rings Of Saturn (Tresor). X-102 attempted to musically describe the physical make-up and content of the never-before seen planet and each of its significant rings known as A, B, C, E and F. Fifteen years later, Banks and Mills have produced a brand new musical soundtrack, featuring re-mastered original compositions paired with a visual version of the project and breathtaking images from the NASA Cassini/Huygen exploratory mission, which visited and documented Saturn and its moons. Musician and director Jeff Mills will discuss the project after the screening. The approximate running time is 1 hour and 15 minutes. This Ohm Multimedia Series program is supported by Axis Records and GammaPlayer.com.
It was the nature of Banks and Mills to plan not only the music but also the image aspects of their project. Mills consistently monitored the discoveries and projects of NASA other Space programs, especially the exploratory mission of the Cassini/Huygen to document the planet and moons of Saturn. Mills watched as the Cassini/Huygen probe sent back to Earth thousands of breathtaking images that were never seen before and scarcely shown to the public. He gained permission to use the images from the Cassini/Huygen program. For more information on the artists, visit AxisRecords.com and GammaPlayer.com

Shaun Ellis, originally from England, has been in Detroit for the past 3
months or so. His organizational skills have been essential to us here at
UR/Alter Ego as a part of our behind the scenes team.
Bileebob (that's me!) has been working on the final flourishes of the Phony EP. Shaun and I recently visited Lola’s to wrap up a video shoot for “Get A Phone” (you don't know it, but you will!).
Lola’s, a downtown club, is another Detroit gem that features a rotating
stable of DJs spinning classic house. The vibe is reminiscent of, dare I say,
the legendary Music Institute?!? Ok maybe not that
deep, but the venue IS a sweatbox with a clean sound system and hungry crowd-
literally. Lola’s features a kitchen as well, and no cover!

Submerge’s own John Collins rocks the decks bi-monthly. John and
Bruce Bailey rocked the crowd properly that night! If you are a house head, peep this spot
out.
The Analog Assassin, scourge of Programmers everywhere! Watch as he takes out a base protected by an array of living weapons! Some of you have already seen the creative combo of UR visual artist Abdul Haqq and animator Takeshi Hirano, but for those who haven't...check this!
Yes, "those who know" out in NYC are aware of PS1, but even if you don't, thanks to the 'net, you can find out about the spot that got rocked recently by Nomadico (aka DJ Dex)! The event was called "Warm Up" and that's what he did, making the hot NYC summer even hotter. Don't believe us? See for yourself at Naheedence! Hear his mix for yourself at the PS1 site! And hear in his own words how he became Nomadico in an interview with WPS1's Jeannie Hopper !
It's Bastille Day all over again as UR infects the populace of Detroit and beyond with the Bastille Day video! Inspired by several tracks from the Electronic Warfare 2.0 project, the video tells the story of...well, we're not telling, just see for yourself!
It's that time of the year again! No, that OTHER time of the year! The time when Alter Ego Management (of whom Underground Resistance is our biggest client!) starts searching for interns! Tasks can and will range from booking, to artist relations, to the not so exciting, mundane things like typing, researching and cataloging. We will be interfacing with Submerge (of course!), Indiana University, radio stations, and more. It's an unpaid internship, but college credit CAN be arranged.
This is an internship for people interested in the BUSINESS of music, in particular, artist and project management and artist relations. We do not have any music production internships available. The internship is extremely flexible in that the responsibilities and hours can vary from person to person. For instance, if a candidate can write good copy, but cannot travel, then perhaps that person would do only that. The time frame is for four months for anyone looking to receive any sort of college credit as an independent study from January to April. Anyone simply looking for experience can discuss with us the parameters of what he or she is looking to accomplish with the internship and how long that may be.
Given the nature of the work, there is a tendency to assume this is casual, "fun" work, and it can be, but schedules and deadlines can be critical to the functioning of the label and there will be some very unglamorous, boring work that still needs to be done as well. There are going to be times when your own creativity and innovation will be critical to getting the job done. This is not a corporate job where you are in a box and expected to only perform a set group of tasks.
While some of the tasks can be tailored to your strengths, the real development comes from taking on challenges that you may be unfamiliar with so that you can grow. The position involves being exposed to a number of problems, the successful candidate will be a person who knows how to find solutions. Below is a list of things that may be asked of you. It is not all inclusive and it may include aspects that you will never experience in the course of the internship. Experience is NOT a prerequisite, only a strong desire to work and learn.
Making followup or cold calls to venues
Reviewing demos
Picking up and/or dropping off artists at the airport
Collection of artist fees for performances
Selling merchandise
Arranging for the design and manufacture of merchandise
Writing and/or distributing press releases and promotional materials
Acting as an artist assistant
Arranging interviews, photo shoots
Tour management
Licensing music to other labels
Arranging remixes for artists
Assisting in show production and/or booking
Researching venues, festivals, labels, travel and more
Responding to fan questions and comments
Conflict resolution
Reading articles, books, blogs, and more
Reviewing basic contracts for performance, sales, etc.
Given that the position may expose you to sensitive information regarding artists on this label and others, a confidentiality agreement is required. Any written documentation of the internship, including academic, is subject to review before dissemination.
Are there perks? Of course! You get access to free music and concerts, meet some of the biggest names in dance and electronic music and more. The internship may very well open up opportunities to work in other fields or in other countries. Or, in the course of the internship, you may be able to create your own paid post internship position with UR, Alter Ego, or another organization. Anything is possible.
For more information contact ALTER EGO MANAGEMENT. Please make certain to put "Internship" in the subject line.
Some of you know it, but some of you don't, we've restarted the forum here at UR Headquarters. For those of you who don't know, the UR Forum was the place where operatives of all types could come and share their thoughts, ask vague and obscure questions, and yes, sometimes interact with UR agents such as Nomadico, Atlantis, and others (yes, the UR lurk quotient is high)!
Things have been low key to start, but a number of UR agents will be appearing for some short and dirty chat sessions via the forum, so stay tuned!

What type of music is this? Do you understand any of this?
Underground Resistance always stood and still stands for more than just music. Please explain for those who don`t know yet your philosophy behind the label. How do you find new talent, what do you do beyond the label work?
The idea of "resistance" is very old. A more important question is what are the conditions that cause it? The spirit of resistance survived in us African Americans throughout the ages and manifested itself into me and Jeff Mills as kids as it did in many of our friends. Our parents were educated and had survived the turbulent 60`s and supported the "resistant" Dr. Martin Luther King`s Civil Rights Movement and anti-war campaigns. Consequently both Jeff and myself were AWARE.
We both had grown tired of seeing the 80`s era commercial media portraying African Americans once again as they were in the 70`s Black Exploitation movies as happy clowns who wanted nothing more than a big fat ass, Diamonds, Furs and Gold, a ridiculously flashy car and a pocket full of cash earned from "Hustlin". These same themes were and still are being broadcasted over the radio and television further spreading the stereotype. So we lived and grew up in an environment that was being bombarded by audio and visual sterotypes that are essentially a guide for failure. I still live in the results of this poison as we speak.
The Underground Resistance website recently changed servers. We would like to send a huge THANKS to our new host Nefarious.net for providing us with their services. We really appreciate everything you do MD!
